SUMMARY:Charlotte Bobcats \\"Green\\" Night
DESCRIPTION:Joanne Stewart\, who is the Group Sales Coordinator for the Charlotte
 Bobcats\, contacted one of our members recently regarding an upcoming event they are
 promoting.
 On Tuesday\, April 7th at 7pm\, the Bobcats will hosting a &quot\;Green&quot\; night
 game. On the concourses they will have a &quot\;Green Theme&quot\; with items like
 green Bobcats T-shirts\, recycling bins\, re-useable grocery bags\, etc...
 to help support and promote enviromental protection.
 The Bobcats will be playing the Philadelpia 76's and as they are
 wrapping up their season\, they are offering group sales ticket prices
 for their Green Night if we have more than 10 in the group.
 Personally\, I know NOTHING about basketball\, but I thought perhaps
 there were some Bobcats fans in the homeschool community who might be
 interested in this so I am gladly passing along the information.
 Group ticket prices for the Green Game are as follows\:
 $10 per ticket for the upperbowl
 $30 per ticket for the lower level
 Children 2 and below are free.
 If there is enough interest to get the group rate\, they are requesting
 one payment being made for all the tickets. Tami at icr97@aol.com says she will be happy to
 coordinate this for the group.
 Once purchased\, tickets can be picked up at the will call window\, mailed directly or be picked up electronically.

 If your family is interested in attending this game\, please email Tami
 directly with how many tickes you would need so she can get a headcount
 and see if we would meet the minimum attendance.

 			just
 			visiting and working on projects.
 			There's a nice area with

 			while the teens are busy\,
 			and those of us who have been coming really
 			enjoy the time to visit
 			with other homeschool moms!
 			Drop us a note if you have questions\,

SUMMARY:Robinson Rock House walk 4/17
DESCRIPTION:Hi\,

 We’re planning to walk to the Robinson Rock House ruins in Reedy Creek Park on Friday\, April 17th\, at 1PM. The ruins are from a stone house built in the late 1700’s. The hike starts from around the Nature Center in Reedy Creek Park\, and is about a mile (more or less) on uneven terrain. The paths are well maintained and well marked. To get to the Nature Center\, after you enter Reedy Creek Park\, go straight (past the first playground.) When you get to the point where you have to go right or left\, go right. The Nature Center is at the end of the road.

 The ruins are a fantastic place for kids to play. They like to climb around on the rocks. There is also an immense fallen tree nearby that’s fun to play on. Along the way there you cross over (or through) a creek once or twice. It’s just a great little hike\, and not difficult. My kids were walking it independently by age 4 or 5.  It’s a good one to bring dogs on too.

  know it’s a short notice but we just had the idea today\, and we wanted to go there once before it got hot and buggy. If people enjoy it maybe we can schedule it again later.

 I’ve included a few links below about the history of the rock house\, in case you or your kids would like to learn a little bit first.

 Charlotte\, NC-- Mecklenburg
 County Park and Recreation is now taking

 &quot\;Rodney's Great Kids Triathlon&quot\; on
 Saturday April 18\, 2009 at the Mecklenburg
 County Aquatic Center\, 800 Martin
 Luther King\, Jr. Boulevard. Competition
 begins at 8\:30am.
 Last year more than 200 youngsters participated\, both boys
 and girls.
 Organizer Rodney Sellars observes that\, &quot\;Lots of kids can run or
 bike or
 swim well\, but this event is designed so they have to do all three.
 It's
 great fun and helps foster youth fitness!
 Advance registration runs
 through April 10 and costs $20. Later
 registrations\, up to and including on
 event morning starting at 7\:30am\, cost
 $25. To register check &lt\;<a href=\\"http\://www.parkandrec.com/\\" rel=\\"nofollow\\" target=\\"_blank\\">http\://www.parkandr ec.com/</a>&gt\;

 For more information call 704-336-7855.
 The
 triathlon is held in the Aquatic Center's pool and on streets

 Competition in swimming\, biking\, and running stretches over a course
 with
 age-appropriate distances. Separate competitions are held for boys and
 girls
 in age categories 8 and younger\, 9-10\, 11-12\, 13-14\, and 15-17.
 This
 event is named for Rodney Sellars\, who has worked at the Aquatic Center
 as a
 supervisor since it first opened. Rodney began this event 12 years ago
 as a
 way to get kids involved in fun and healthy activity. Two years ago\,
 Rodney
 was named Mecklenburg County Employee of the Year\, in part because of
 the
 popularity of this event. Rodney has also taught thousands of youngsters
 to
 swim!

 <b>Homeschool Pack 94 Tiger Round Up</b>

 Every year
 the Tiger Den of Homeschool Pack 94 invites prospective Tiger Cubs to
 their last den meeting before becoming Wolves.  It's how the Tigers
 help their pack go!  This year's Tigers have planned a fun night that
 will include a fire engine visit from a local fire station.

 Being a
 Tiger is a lot of fun\, and it's a great way to introduce a young boy to
 scouting.  They watch the scouts before them climbing in rank and learn
 how to work together as a den.  Mr. Lake Speed and Mr. Jesse
 Metford helped this year's den fully experience the Tiger Cub motto\,
 &quot\;Search\, Discover\, Share&quot\;.  The Tigers visited Joe Gibbs Racing and
 attended a Nascar event\, took a trip to a local TV station\, helped with
 a food drive\, toured a local historic site to see how children lived
 long ago\, and visited a fire station and explored a fire engine.
 Tigers also had two opportunities to go camping and hike with their
 den.  They built their first Raingutter Regatta boats and Pinewood
 Derby cars and now can't wait to be Wolves!

 Pack 94 is
 a homeschool pack committed to helping parents train up their young
 boys.  Tigers are rising first graders or 6 by August 14th.  For more
 information email <a rel=\\"nofollow\\">amberb@carolina. rr.com</a> or you may call with questions (704) 503-4073 after 4\:30pm.

SUMMARY:Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens Homeschool Day
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;

  Friday\, April 24\, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
 &gt\;
 &gt\; In this exploration of trees native to the Carolinas\, students
 &gt\;
 &gt\; will learn about classification using tree leaves as
 &gt\;
 &gt\; a guide. Students will conduct a Michaux Native Tree
 &gt\;
 &gt\; and Plant Search to discover plants that are native to
 &gt\;
 &gt\; the Carolinas-many of which were first discovered and
 &gt\;
 &gt\; described by plant explorer André Michaux. Along the
 &gt\;
 &gt\; way students will also learn a few invasive plants and
 &gt\;
 &gt\; discover how they disrupt the delicate balance of the
 &gt\;
 &gt\; native ecosystem. Math connections will offer opportunities
 &gt\;
 &gt\; to estimate tree height using two different methods.
 &gt\;
 &gt\; Students will 'recycle' trees to create their own paper
 &gt\;
 &gt\; and plant a native plant to take home with them.
 &gt\;
 &gt\; Key Concepts\: Botanical characteristics\, classification\,
 &gt\;
 &gt\; economics\, ecology\, invasive plant species\, ecosystem
 &gt\;
 &gt\; balance/disruption\, native plant adaptations\, mathematical
 &gt\;
 &gt\; estimation

 Home School Days are offered on a come-and-go
 &gt\;
 &gt\; basis from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to permit more time for in-depth
 &gt\;
 &gt\; learning and exploration. Come for a few hours if
 &gt\;
 &gt\; you wish\, or bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it!
 &gt\;
 &gt\; Fees are based per child\; each registered child will
 &gt\;
 &gt\; receive a program passport on the day of the program that
 &gt\;
 &gt\; will enable them to participate in the activity stations.
 &gt\;
 &gt\; Cost for each Day\: $8 per child participant\, $6 per parent or
 &gt\;
 &gt\; Chaperone

SUMMARY:Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden Home School Day
DESCRIPTION:DANIEL STOWE BOTANICAL GARDEN
 Home School Days
 The Garden is proud to offer these new programs
 designed especially for the self-paced needs of homeschooled
 students. Home School Days are staggered
 throughout the year\, with a changing theme each time—
 choose one day or as many as you like to enhance your science
 studies. Your young scholars will be hooked on science!
 Each program day will include a variety of learning
 stations with hands-on\, guided discovery experiences that
 accommodate a variety of learning styles and levels so
 that each student’s experience can be tailored to their
 skills\, interests and needs.
 Home School Days are offered on a come-and-go
 basis from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to permit more time for in-depth
 learning and exploration. Come for a few hours if
 you wish\, or bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it!
 Fees are based per child\; each registered child will
 receive a program passport on the day of the program that
 will enable them to participate in the activity stations.
 Cost for each Day\: $8 per child participant\, $6 per parent or
 Chaperone
 (Non-participating children/siblings will be admitted at
 the Education self-guided rate of $3 each\, with children
 4 and under admitted free)
 Friday\, April 24\, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
 In this exploration of trees native to the Carolinas\, students
 will learn about classification using tree leaves as
 a guide. Students will conduct a Michaux Native Tree
 and Plant Search to discover plants that are native to
 the Carolinas—many of which were first discovered and
 described by plant explorer André Michaux. Along the
 way students will also learn a few invasive plants and
 discover how they disrupt the delicate balance of the
 native ecosystem. Math connections will offer opportunities
 to estimate tree height using two different methods.
 Students will ‘recycle’ trees to create their own paper
 and plant a native plant to take home with them.
 Key Concepts\: Botanical characteristics\, classification\,
 economics\, ecology\, invasive plant species\, ecosystem
 balance/disruption\, native plant adaptations\, mathematical
 estimation

 <b>The Man
 And His Mules Tell The Story Of A </b>

 <b>Very
 Slow Journey Across The Tarheel State</b>

 SPENCER
 – The N.C. Transportation Museum\, in association with the North Carolina
 Humanities Council\, will host “Hoofing It By Mule Across North
 Carolina\,” Saturday\, April 25\, featuring Bernie Harberts.  Though
 the museum features trains\, airplanes and automobiles\, this program will focus
 on a more traditional form of transportation.  Harberts will appear with
 Woody The Mule\, the beast of burden that carried him across North Carolina\, and
 Maggie The Pony\, who joined the pair on their later trip across the nation.

 In
 these
 days of high speed interstate travel\, back seat DVD players and
 directions at
 the touch of a GPS\, Bernie Harberts decided to cross the Tarheel State
 on the back of a mule.  The unusual decision made to celebrate the
 state’s
 vanishing rural culture.  It also was a way for Harberts to reconnect
 with
 people after spending five years sailing around the world alone.

 Harberts
 and Woody began their journey March 15\, 2004 in Oriental\, N.C.  After
 arriving on the North Carolina coast\, the westerly trek began.
 Despite an uncooperative mule and the elements\, it was a successful
 journey.  Over the next 600 miles\, Harberts met and learned about the
 state’s rural families.  He discovered that Pin Hook\, N.C. was named
 for the way early residents fished.  He learned that Hell Town\, N.C. has
 nothing to do with the devil.  He learned that flour burgers\, where flour
 is substituted for meat\, are nearing extinction.  Harberts collected
 pictures\, recipes and other memorabilia\, ending his Tarheel State travels in the Great Smoky Mountains.

 Then
 Harberts and Woody decided to extend their journey.  Thirteen months after
 departing Oriental\, N.C.\, the pair reached San Diego and the Pacific Ocean.
 Harberts’ book\, “Too Proud To Ride A Cow” documents his 3500
 mile journey\, the people he met and the addition of Maggie the pony to his
 menagerie.  A children’s book\, “Woody and Maggie…Walk
 Across America\,” also tells the story.

 A
 graduate of N.C. State University and a resident of Southern Pines\, N.C.\,
 Harberts has embarked on several adventures.  Before crossing the country
 by mule\, Harberts circumnavigating the globe in a 35 foot sail boat\, a trip
 recounted in the DVD documentary “65 Days Alone At Sea.”  Most
 recently\, Harberts traveled by wagon from Canada to Mexico\, a story soon to be
 released in print and on DVD.  Harberts’ website\, <a href=\\"http\://www.riverearth.com/\\" rel=\\"nofollow\\" target=\\"_blank\\">www.riverearth. com</a>\, describes him as a “good writer\, a
 fair horseman and a lousy judge of distance.”

 Harberts\,
 his mule Woody and his pony Maggie will tell their story and show photos of the
 journey across North Carolina at 1 p.m. in the Bob Julian Roundhouse
 Orientation Room at the N.C. Transportation Museum.  The program is free
 and open to the public.

 The N.C. Transportation Museum\, located in historic Spencer Shops\, the former Southern Railway
 repair facility\, is part of the Division of State Historic Sites\, Department of
 Cultural Resources.  The museum is located just five minutes off I-85 at
 Exit 79 in Spencer\, N.C.\, and about an hour from Charlotte\, Greensboro or Winston-Salem. Visit <a href=\\"http\://www.nctrans.org/\\" rel=\\"nofollow\\" target=\\"_blank\\">www.nctrans. org</a> for more
 information.  The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources is celebrating the
 2009 theme of “Treasure N.C. Culture.”  For information on the
