We’re doing it again! Invention afternoon, Monday, May 4th. Here’s the info again:
I’d like to offer up our basement the afternoon of Monday, May 4th, starting at 1PM, for an “invention afternoon.” We have a room in the basement where we keep a whole bunch of reclaimed materials, art supplies, and building tools, and Charlie uses them to build various things of his own imagination. At the moment it’s lots of pretend weapons, but he’s also created many other things. The room is pretty small, but the kids can spread out into the main part of the basement as well. I think that a maximum of 10 kids would work.
If you’re interested, I’ll need you to bring some materials to share with the group, because we don’t have enough stuff for everyone. If everyone brought a few things (whatever is easy/cheap for them to obtain) then they should have plenty to work with. Also of course if there is some particular item your child wants to build something with it’s fine to bring that for him or her.
If your child needs supervision when around hand tools and the hot glue gun and who knows what else, you’ll need to provide it. I will stay within range to hear very loud screams of pain, but I won’t be directly supervising.
Please email me if interested. I’ll put a list of ideas for materials below, but anything is fine. These are just ideas.
Hope to see you there!
-Jody
Some ideas for materials:
Cardboard tubes (from paper towel rolls, but heavier ones are more popular.)
Pvc pipes and connectors of any diameter (we have the tool to easily cut these without using a hacksaw.)
Small, broken appliances
Bubble wrap
Brown paper
DUCT TAPE, various colors
Scrap wood
Cereal boxes
Soda bottles
Oatmeal canisters
Spray paint (especially silver-colored for some reason)
String
Rubber bands
Batteries (you never know) and wire, and small electrical components like little light bulbs and buzzers. (We have a wire stripper/cutter)
Tools (We have all the basic tools, but if it’s a large group it might be good to have more.)
Anything else that seems like a good idea

Dear
CHEA Directors,
Following
is the notice about college planning and funding information sessions we
previously discussed. Also note there is an attached post card
invitation. I have planned two (2) free events for CHEA groups. I will be
glad to schedule additional sessions, if there is the desire, that may be more
convenient considering time and location, at your request. I am
also available to schedule meetings with individual families. Call me if
you have any questions. It was suggested that I get this notice out about
a month in advance. Please erase this opening paragraph so the message to
your members begins with “FREE COLLEGE PLANNING AND INFORMATIN
SESSIONS” below. Thank you so much for your interest and
consideration. Call me if you have any questions. I look forward to
good turnouts.

FREE COLLEGE PLANNING AND FUNDING INFORMATION SESSIONS
Dear CHEA Parents, High School and 8th Grade
Students,
“Students are
changing to cheaper schools and even taking leaves of absence to cope with bad
economy.” Charlotte
Observer December 16, 2008
College will be here before you know it. Do you want
to be in this position?
A startling fact is that over 50% of the students who start
college never finish due to lack of funding, change in majors and change in
colleges. Our College Graduate Program will assist your family avoid this
by explaining the common mistakes and pitfalls, by identifying deadlines you
must observe and ways to turn the process in your favor. We offer proven methods that have been developed
through years of research and hands on experience.
“...it (FAFSA Form)
has become so intimidating – with more than 100 questions... scares off
families...preventi ng some from going to college.” ...“the
form does a poor job of assessing financial worth.” President Obama’s
secretary of education states, “you basically have to have a Ph.D. to
figure that thing out.” Charlotte
Observer February 21, 2009
Wouldn’t it be great if all the information and
answers were available in one comprehensive, easy to use plan?
Great news! They are! College Funding Solutions
understands that college planning and funding can often be a stressful time for
families like yours. We have guided over 18,000 students and parents
through the sometimes difficult process.
The best news – our College Graduate Program gives
answers from your perspective, not the college’s, the internet or
some biased third party.
The first question you may ask is “When do I begin
planning?” The answer is NOW! College funding is awarded on a
first come first served basis.
College Funding Solutions invites you to attend a FREE
information sessions to discuss;
-
Why
starting now is so important
-
How to effectively explore majors, colleges and
career options
-
The ‘behind the scenes’ methods colleges
use to select students and award funding
-
How to find the best school for you and to improve
your odds of being admitted
...and much more!

Dear CHEA Parents, High
School and 8th Grade Students,
“Students are changing to cheaper schools and even
taking leaves of absence to cope with bad economy.” Charlotte Observer December
16, 2008
College will be here before
you know it. Do you want to be in this
position?
A startling fact is that over
50% of the students who start college never finish due to lack of funding,
change in majors and change in colleges.
Our College Graduate Program will assist your family avoid this by explaining
the common mistakes and pitfalls, by identifying deadlines you must observe and
ways to turn the process in your favor.
We offer proven methods that have been developed through years of
research and hands on experience.
“...it (FAFSA Form) has become so intimidating
– with more than 100 questions...scares off families...preventing some from
going to college.” ...“the form does a poor job of assessing financial
worth.” President Obama’s secretary of education states, “you basically
have to have a Ph.D. to figure that thing out.” Charlotte Observer

the internet or some biased third party.

What: Musuem Highlights Tour including New Orleans Art Exhibit
This includes three galleries and takes about one hour.
When: Friday 5/8/09 at 10am
This was the only day we could get a no charge rate as a school group, if we choose another day it would be $5 per
person. This tour has booked up fast and no other dates were available to us unless we went in June and then it could
not be considered a "school field trip" by their standards.
Other: They prefer that children under the age of 5 not enter the exhibit areas, they said we could step away from the group with
the younger ones if we choose to bring them.
RSVP: I need a firm headcount by Friday 4/3/09 in order for the staff to have an idea of how to set our tour up.

"Serving the community through the arts" is the motto of The Healing Force, a family of performers based
in Winston-Salem who use music, singing, dance, and storytelling to
bring traditional African culture to life for audiences of all ages.
The husband-and- wife team of Joseph and Gail Anderson founded The Healing Force in
1975. The Andersons have acted with the Afro-American Folkloric Troupe
and studied with the National Black Theater of New York. With their
daughter, Sonji Gardner, and son, Karim, they began full-time
professional performances in 1990. Their name, The Healing Force, was suggested by a friend to symbolize both the healing quality of art and the power of its presence.
The Healing Force has
traveled the country and appeared in venues such as The National
Storytelling Festival, the Bay Area Storytelling Festival, and numerous
festivals, schools, colleges, churches, museums, family reunions, and
community events. Through the years, the Andersons have enhanced their
performances with training from cultural masters Mohammed
Da Costa of Guinea, Djimo Kouyate of Senegal, and Mamady Kelta of
Guinea; through travel to Nigeria and Ghana; and study at the 1997 and
1998 Summer Jembe Institutes.
The Healing Force turns
any appearance into a lively, colorful celebration of African culture
and spirit with booming drums, rattling gourds (shekeres), and thumb
pianos, as they tell tales and sing songs. The use of drums and musical
instruments is important to their mission. To share African culture,
they must share music and dance, which are woven into everyday life and
are an integral part of every important event in Africa. They point out
the similarity of African folktales to traditional American folktales.
Gail observes, "African folk tales talk about family, adventure,
tricksters, love, community loyalty, life’s lessons, etc."
African
arts, history, and family genealogy are traditionally passed on orally
from generation to generation. African storytelling is a communal,
participatory experience. The Healing Force wants each of their performances to be a group experience for both the audience and themselves. Look forward to joining The Healing Force in a rousing, high-energy celebration of life!

We are having a number of informational meetings ,

and/or our Tapestry of Grace Co-op, which is currently
accepting applications for Fall 2009 membership.

We currently have members from West Huntersville,
Mount Holly, Mooresville, Davidson, and of course the Highland
Creek/ Concord area.
The Institute for Excellence in Writing, Apologia Science,

included within our Co-op.
We meet once a week for discussion and activities that
involve interacting with the studied materials.
Tapestry covers history,
geography, church history, Bible, philosophy,
fine arts and government.
In Tapestry, children of all ages study the same
subjects at the same time, but at their level, greatly
simplifying multi-level teaching.
Writing is taught by an IEW-certified Accomplished
Instructor . Electives include public speaking and debate
taught using Communicators for Christ materials,
Apologia Science
(General, Physical, Biology,

There is, no cost to the basic co-op other
than a supply fee for materials as all moms will be making a
contribution of some kind involving their love, energy,
prayers and teaching. (Don't panic if you're new to
homeschooling or still figuring it out....You do have
something to give and there are many important
ways you can help.) Electives often include a fee.

more about Tapestry of Grace and/or the co-op, please

First I would like to thank all of you
for your tremendous support of our
Education Days. It is truly a pleasure to have all of your kids
at the ballpark. The first two of our Education Days have gone very
well. First one a little cold and windy but all in all, a great start to
our season.
As a reminder, we have two more on the
horizon for those that have not booked their day yet or for those that just want
to come back again. May 20th is the 11:05am game and June 2nd is the last
of our Education Day games for '09 and begins at 10:05am. The June 2nd
game is nearing capacity so if you want to come and we don't know about it yet,
please RSVP as soon as possible.

> School Credits
> A seminar for middle school/early high school homeschooling parents
> by Karen Davis
>
> Are you a homeschooling parent who has a child in middle school or
> just entering high school? Has your child followed an eclectic
> approach with their studies in elementary school and middle school?
> Do you ever wonder how you will turn their unique approaches to
> learning into real high school credits for graduation and college?
> Are you in a panic now that they are about to enter high school and
> you are not sure where to turn? Then this seminar is for you!
>
> Karen Davis is an area homeschooling mother of four with twenty years
> experience. She has graduated one daughter and will soon graduate her
> oldest son. She also has two younger children. Please join her as
> she discusses her family’s homeschooling journey and what she has
> learned over the years. She will discuss the many paths to higher
> education besides selective 4 year colleges and who might benefit
> them, creating a teamwork approach to planning your child’s high
> school years, beginning with the end in mind even when they do not
> have a clue, and how to be your child’s best Guidance Counselor as you
> face the high school journey together. Record keeping, transcripts,
> and creative credits will be discussed as well as resources to help in
> planning the high school years.
>
> Where: Cannon Memorial Library, Main Branch in downtown Concord
> When: Tuesday, May 26th 2009
> Time: 2:00 to 5:00

Scholars of Grace Co-op Informational Meeting
Serving Pre-school – High School
We are having a number of informational meetings ,
for families with students of all ages interested in finding out
more about the Tapestry of Grace Curriculum
and/or our Tapestry of Grace Co-op, which is currently
accepting applications for Fall 2009 membership.
Informational meetings on:
Thursday, May 14th, 7pm
Tuesday, May 19th, 7pm
Wed, May 27th, 7pm
An established co-op, beginning our third year, we are relocating to
meeting
in the Fall in the Concord/Kannapolis area.
We currently have members from West Huntersville,
Mount Holly, Mooresville, Davidson, and of course the Highland
Creek/ Concord area.
The Institute for Excellence in Writing, Apologia Science,
Communicators for Christ speech, and CLEP prep is also
included within our Co-op.
We meet once a week for discussion and activities that
involve interacting with the studied materials.
Tapestry covers history,
geography, church history, Bible, philosophy,
fine arts and government.
In Tapestry, children of all ages study the same
subjects at the same time, but at their level, greatly
simplifying multi-level teaching.
Writing is taught by an IEW-certified Accomplished
Instructor . Electives include public speaking and debate
taught using Communicators for Christ materials,
Apologia Science
(General, Physical, Biology,
and Chemistry) taught by a science teacher, current geography,
and CLEP Prep.
If you would like to attend one of the meetings to find out
more about Tapestry of Grace and/or the co-op, please
RSVP by email to email to
lalbinus@windstream .net
.
Please be sure to include
your phone number in the response. I will email back
directions and call you to go over any questions!
