Latta Plantation Nature Center and Preserve


Latta Plantation Nature Center and Preserve, the largest preserve in Mecklenburg County, is a fantastic resource for area homeschoolers!  Located at 6211 Sample Road in Huntersville, NC, the 1,460 acre preserve extends as a peninsula into Mountain Island Lake.

Amenities include:

  • 16 miles of hiking trails (13 miles hiking and horseback riding, 3 miles hiking only)    
  • Self-interpretive trail guides for some trails
  • Paddling areas with two launch sites (one is ADA accessible)
  • A fishing dock and other fishing opportunities
  • Nature Center featuring live, native animals, a discovery hall, an outdoor amphitheater, and a gift shop
  • Natural Wildlife Federation certified Backyard Habitat Garden with bird feeding stations, butterfly gardens, a garden pond, and a demonstration compost area


In addition to their public programming, Latta Plantation regularly offers classes and programming specifically for homeschoolers.  Latta keeps their offerings age appropriate and low cost.  If you want to be one of the first to find out about some of their activities, you can sign up for the Latta Homeschoolers Meet Up group.   • Blank-ologist for a Day - ages 6-8 ($3)
  • Build a Box Oven - Family


The Nature Center also offers ongoing, weekly science classes for homeschoolers for a nominal fee.  New course information is released on the first of the month for the following month.  Homeschoolers are encouraged to call the Nature Center to inquire about upcoming homeschool classes!
